Description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: All custodians shall meet all of the legal and/or health requirements as set forth by state law and/or local board of education; Title 1 BA:16-22 3, 4, 5. They should also be able to relate well to students and staff. Must have knowledge of tools, materials and standard practices necessary to maintain an assigned area in a clean, orderly manner. Must be able to follow verbal and written instruction. Must be able to safely lift fifty (50) pounds.


*REQUIRED to obtain a New Jersey Black Seal Boiler License within ONE(l) YEAR of employment Start Date.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Perform cleaning and support functions in assigned areas following established schedules and using prescribed methods:


a. Dust horizontal surfaces.
b. Empty waste baskets, remove trash.
c. Damp wipe furniture, wash ceilings, lights, vents, walls, windows inside, and outside if weather permitting.

d. Clean and polish fixtures in bathrooms.
e. Dry and wet mop floors of rooms, offices and corridors.
f. Vacuum carpets for cleaning and bacteria control.
g. Trash - collect and transport to designated areas. Trash to be placed in appropriate dumpster, and infectious waste to be placed in appropriate containers.

h. Spot clean walls, windows, and polish metal surfaces.
i. Replenish room supplies
j. Strip, shower scrub, refinish, buff and burnish floors with appropriate equipment.
k. Move furniture and set up meeting rooms.

l. Spot clean, damp buff or extract carpets as assigned

m. Empty trash receptacles, sweep entranceways/sidewalks, and pick-up trash in and around grounds and parking areas.
n. De-lce and clear snow from entranceways, sidewalks and parking areas.
o. Assist in cleaning of spills.
p. Maintain assigned equipment for cleanliness, and have repairs made when necessary.
q. Preventive maintenance equipment checks should be made on a timely basis.

 

2. Perform Emergency and Routine Maintenance activities in assigned areas following established schedules and prescribed methods:

 

a. Performs daily inspection of areas and spaces checking specifically for building elements in need of repair including: broken chalkboards, light bulbs repfacement, wall or ceiling damage, leaky sinks, leaky/plugged toilets. Performs necessary minor repairs with or without the guidance and assistance of other team members.  

b. Handles routine weekly inspections of assigned areas to assure that furniture, wall finishes, ceiling tiles, carpets, etc., are properly maintained and repaired as needed.
c. Installs specialty equipment and components including chalkboards, maps) pictures, plaques, shelving, etc.
d. Assists maintenance mechanics and other team members in project work set-up, specific repair work and area clean up in support of various repair and project jobs.
e. Completes required work order forms and follow-ups on repair orders to assure that maintenance is completed in a timely manner.

f. Operates various types of equipment and machinery which includes: hand trucks, vacuum cleaners, carpet shampoo machine, floor buffer/polisher, steam cleaner, washing machine and dryer, cleaning agent pumps, etc, Uses small hand tools including: screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, drills, saws, and related equipment.

 

3. In keeping with the District's and Department's Quality Improvement goals, it is the policy of the Facilities Department that all employees are expected to comply with the District's and Departmental standards of performance and behavior as outlined in the respective Policies and Procedures Manuals.


4. Performs other department duties as assigned by Department Management.


5. Initiates purchase requests for supplies and equipment.


6. Maintains kit inventories of selective supplies and tools.


7. May assist other team members and department personnel in performance of emergency, routine and project work.


8. Attends in-service education classes and safety training sessions.


9. Supports department quality control requirements and participates in Environmental Team, Quality Team and department program activities and exercises.


10. Maintains a professional image in the department. 


11. In case of fire, or other emergency conditions, i.e., internal disasters, performs duties as assigned.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

-Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day and be able to be on your feet for prolonged periods of time if required.
-Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics assistance so as to function adequately and complete various job requirements.
-Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability and guidance for others to follow.
-Must be able to lift, push and move equipment and supplies throughout the day.
-Must be available if called back to work for short staffing situations, emergencies, disasters or other special circumstances.
-Must be able to work shift hours outside regular working schedule.
-On occasion, must work outdoors in all weather conditions.
-The work environment of the District is maintained by all Facilities Department employees so as to be well lit, clean and safe.

-Safe work practices are expected of all personnel in the department.


IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: PM Custodial Supervisor/Director of Facilities Management


EVALUATION: Performance in this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with state statutes and rulesl board policies and administrative directives.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) months, Full-Time with Benefits
